Leeds United legend Jack Charlton has
passed away at the age of 85 following a long-term illness.

Road where he made a club-record 773 appearances for the club, a record which

Joining the team in 1950 initially as
a part of the ground staff before making his debut against Doncaster in April
1953, he was the centre-back key player in the club’s golden age under Don
Revie.

Charlton would win promotion from the
second tier twice in 1956 as runners-up, before Don Revie led Leeds United to
the Second Division title in 1964.

He would go on to win the League Cup,
two Inter Cities’ Fairs Cups, the First Division, Charity Shield and FA Cup
before hanging up his boots at the end of the 1972/73 season.

Following his retirement as a player
he went on to enjoy a successful career in management at Middlesbrough,
Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United and also with the Republic of Ireland,
who he took to two World Cup tournaments in 1990 and 1994.

Jack died peacefully on Friday 10 July
at the age of 85,” it reads. He was at home in Northumberland, with his
family by his side.

As well as a friend to many, he was a
