Students who follow these methods learn more easily, retain material for longer periods of time, and save themselves hours of study time. Set aside certain hours of each day for study just as you do for nourishment and sleep. Keep the same schedule faithfully from day-to-day. The amount of time needed for study will vary for each individual based on skills with the subject matter. An average of two hours of study each day for each hour in class is recommended. Going to class is only the beginning; the real work begins afterwards!

Make a Schedule or To-Do List

At school, juggling several projects and deadlines can be stressful. It’s easy to lose track of one assignment while working on another. With a proper plan, you can better organize your deadlines and manage your time.

Determine when you’re most productive and set aside time for homework and extracurricular activities. You can keep track of your classes and assignments by using a planner or digital calendar. For people who prefer to write to-do lists and schedule appointments by hand, paper planners are ideal.

According to one study, simply writing things down improves your concentration and recall. By making a schedule or to-do-list, you building your studying mode and by so doing you can overcome distraction and stay focused on studying.

Turn Off Alerts

Constant notifications and text messages are every college student’s enemy. Put your phone on silent or in “Do Not Disturb” mode, and close unnecessary tabs on your computer. If you need the Internet, keep one tab open. You can fight online distractions by blocking or hiding time-wasting websites and apps.

Break Down Your Work into Smaller Tasks

The studying tricks of breaking your work into smaller tasks is one of the most effective ways to stay focused on studying. Defeat procrastination by breaking a large project into small pieces. It’s easier to motivate yourself to do something in smaller tasks rather than jumping into a huge one. If you’re having a difficult time studying or getting work done, break up your time effectively.

Try giving yourself a 10-minute break for every 45-50 minutes of work you do. Studies show that taking breaks can help you retain information and increase productivity.

Use Headphones

If you’re working in a noisy environment, use noise-canceling headphones. Listening to music through earbuds can also tune out distracting noises like people talking too loudly or construction work. Often, though, music with lyrics can be too distracting. Researchers suggest listening to classical or instrumental music to improve concentration. Students who use headphone while studying have showed a better understanding of what they study.

Find the Right Place to Do Work

Some students benefit from some background noise, while others require complete silence. Learn about your working style and the environment you prefer. Are you the type who likes to work in silence at the library? Or do you prefer the hushed atmosphere of a campus coffee shop? Experiment with a few different locations to see how each study session goes.

Clear Your Desk

A messy workspace can keep you from getting your work done. Go through your desk and keep only the essentials. A clean workspace can help reduce anxiety and make room for motivation which in turn helps you to stay focused on studying..

Reward Yourself

A little motivation can go a long way. Setting up a reward system is a good way to encourage yourself to do something. For example, if you finish an essay without any distractions, give yourself a reward like watching a video or taking a nap.
