What is GPA?
Grade Point Average also known as GPA is a number that indicates how well or how high you scored in your courses on average.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA refers to scores obtained in a semester, CGPA measures the overall academic performance of a student i.e. the scores they have obtained in all the semesters combined.
How is GPA calculated in Nigeria University?
Grade Point Average (GPA) is derived by dividing the Total Quality point (TQP) for the semester by the Total Credit Unit (TCU) for that semester.
For instance: If in a semester, a student earned 56 quality points for 18 Credit Units, the students GPA is 56/18 = 3.11 .
Bearing in mind that GPA is derived by dividing the Total Grade/Quality point (TQP/TGP) by the Total Credit unit (TCU) for that semester; Hence CGPA – Cumulative Grade Point Average. (This is what you have after both 1st and 2nd semester. In summation and Division, amounting to it)
GPA – Grade Point Average (This is what you have after every semester)
How to analyze Grades
- 70-100 = A
- 60-69 = B
- 50-59 = C
- 45-49 = D
- 40-44 = E
- 0-39 = F
……………………………………………………….
- 4.50 – 5.00 = First Class
- 3.50 – 4.49 = 2nd Class Upper
- 2.40 – 3.49 = 2nd Class Lower
- 1.50 – 2.39 = 3rd Class
- 1.0 – 1.49 = Pass
How can I calculate my GPA?
GPA is derived by dividing the Total Grade/Quality point (TQP/TGP) by the Total Credit unit (TCU) for that semester
C.U – Credit Units
TCU – Total Credit Unit
G.P – Grade Point
TGP or TQP – Total Grade Point or Quality Point
Thus;
GPA ….. This is derived by dividing the Total Grade/Quality point (TQP/TGP) by the Total Credit unit (TCU) for that semester.
For example:
If in a semester, a student earned 90 quality points for 21 credit units, the GPA will be;
GPA = TGP/TCU
90/21
= 4.28
HOW TO CALCULATE CGPA
CGPA is derived by adding the Total Quality Points (TQP) for all the semesters to date and dividing by the Total Credit Units to date for all semester… 1st & 2nd.
For example:
If in a semester a student earns a QP of 90 for 21 CU in the first semester and earns a QP of 87 for 20 CU in the second semester, His/Her CGPA will be ;
CGPA = TQP/TCU
= (90+87) / (21+20)
= 177 / 41
= 4.31

Your CGPA for that session will be,
CGPA = 4.31
……………………………….Breaking it Down:
√ Let’s Consider a 1st Semester Result as shown below;
S/n Units. Grade G.P
- 3 × (A) 5 = 15
- 2 × (B) 4 = 8
- 2 × (A) 5 = 10
- 3 × (A) 5 = 15
- 3 × (C) 3 = 9
- 3 × (D) 2 = 6
- 2 × (E) 1. = 2
TCU. TGP
=18 = 65
°
° °
GPA = TGP/TCU
= 65/18
= 3.61
√√ Let us now consider 2nd Semester Result.
NB: We’d carry out same procedure in 1st semester then apply here.
But let’s assume our TCU & TGP to be = 20 and = 93 respectively.
GPA for second semester GPA = TGP/TCU
93/20
= 4.65
………………………………………………………..
√√√ You’ll add first semester and semester together to get CGPA. AS As shown below;
Mathematically;
CGPA = TGP+TGP(1st & 2nd semester) / TCU+TCU(1st & 2nd Semester
CGPA = 65+94/ 18+20
= 159 / 38
= 4.184210
NB: Always approximate your point to 2 decimal places.
Thus: Your main CGPA = 4.18
